The Government Spokesperson made significant remarks last night on two major infrastructure projects in the Paphos district, speaking at the Annual General Meeting of the Paphos Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Paphos Marina
Regarding the Paphos Marina project, which has been in the planning stages since 1994, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis recalled that the first tender was launched in 2006. He announced that a decision by the Marinas Management Committee on the evaluation of the expression of interest is expected in early November. The concession agreement with the successful bidder is expected to be signed within 2027.
Paphos–Polis Chrysochous Road
With regard to the Paphos–Polis Chrysochous Road project, he recalled that planning for the motorway began in 1990, while studies conducted in 2007 envisaged its delivery by 2013.
The contract, signed in 2021 and valued at €73 million, provided for completion in November 2024.
By 31 January 2023, 47.6% of the contractual period had elapsed, yet work worth only €2.6 million had been carried out. This represented less than 4% of the total contract value, despite half of the scheduled completion period having already passed.
By October 2024, project progress stood at just 21.1%, despite repeated efforts to move the project forward. At the same time, the contractor was seeking additional compensation of €36.2 million and a 59-month extension—almost five additional years.
“Announcing a project takes just a few minutes. Delivering it requires solid foundations, responsible decisions and continuous oversight,” he stated.
Next Steps and Project Timeline
He went on to explain that the current objective and schedule are to launch the tendering process for both phases within 2027.
For Phase 1, covering the section from Agia Marinouda to Stroumpi, land expropriations have already been completed, and the environmental assessment has been secured for the full four-lane highway.
The plan also includes Phase 2, covering the section from Stroumpi to Polis Chrysochous.
A meeting has been scheduled for early November between the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, the Paphos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EVE Paphos), and the relevant stakeholders. The meeting will focus on the updated project planning and the next steps.
